Big Smooth isn’t a single shared login everyone talks over. It knows who’s asking, gives each person their own access, keeps private things private, and lets parents draw the lines — so it’s genuinely safe to put in front of kids.
Everyone signs in as themselves
A family is a Smoo org and each member signs in with their own identity. Who’s asking is verified, never self-asserted — so every rule below is a real boundary, not a setting a kid can flip.
Per-member tool access
Give each person exactly the tools they should have. A teen can search and write; a younger kid gets reads only. Access is bound to who they are, so it can’t be widened from the chat.
Private memory vs. family memory
What you tell Big Smooth privately stays yours and follows you across your devices. Shared family facts — the Wi-Fi code, the vet’s number, the pizza order — are there for everyone.
Calendars you control
Share only the calendars a child should see when they use the calendar tool — “Family” and “Kids Sports,” not your work calendar. The limit is set by the parent and can’t be talked around.
Parents can always see their kids
A child’s private memory and knowledge is always visible to their parents — while kids stay walled off from each other. Guardianship is built into the rules, not bolted on.

A kid mode you can actually hand over.
Smoo Jr is a locked-down role for children — fail-closed by design. It can help with homework, answer questions, and read what you’ve shared, but it can’t reach a shell, the open web, your files, or anyone else’s memory. The limits are enforced where the tools run, not asked for in a prompt a clever kid could work around.
Allowlist, not blocklist
Smoo Jr starts with nothing and is granted only safe, read-only tools. Anything not explicitly allowed is denied.
No shell, no open web
No arbitrary commands, no browsing the whole internet — the risky tools simply aren’t in a kid’s hands.
Parents stay in the loop
A child’s activity and memory is visible to their parents, and their tools are the ones you chose.
Kids use Smoo Jr under a parent’s family account. Standalone accounts for children under 13 require verifiable parental consent and aren’t offered yet.

Big Smooth runs as a small always-on service on a machine you own — one ~10 MB binary, no cloud account required to start. Talk to the same assistant from a streaming terminal (th code) or your browser (th web); it’s one brain behind every screen.

Every tool call passes through three independent layers before it runs. The strong ones are enforced by the operating system, so an agent — or a clever kid — can’t talk its way past them.
1 · Permission engine
Allow, ask, or deny — per person, per tool. A scoped member can only do what their role permits, and sensitive actions can require a yes.
2 · Always watching
In-process surveillance scans every call for secrets, prompt-injection, and dangerous commands, escalating anything ambiguous — and redacts secrets from results.
3 · OS sandbox
On macOS, shell writes are confined to a workspace, credential stores are unreadable, and network egress is locked to an allowlist — enforced by the kernel.
The permission engine and surveillance run everywhere; the kernel-level sandbox is macOS today, with other platforms in flight.
